Spiritual Engagements

Dedicating Akwa Ibom to God

It became a tradition under Governor Godswill Akpabio, for the entire Akwa Ibom people to come before Almighty God at the beginning of every year, to thank and commit the affairs of the State to Him.

For Governor Akpabio, creating spiritual atmosphere was a necessity that could not be overlooked. As such, he used every opportunity to take his people to God. Occasions like Democracy Day, State Anniversary, the famous 9,999-Choir Christmas Carol Night, which is spiritual tourism of sort; the annual pilgrimage to the Holy Land and the Memorial Service for Akwa Ibom Slain Heroes provided opportunities for the people of the State to seek God’s intervention in their affairs.

Worthy of mention also is the prayer meeting involving the Governor, his family and members of his cabinet, which was as regular feature in St. John Chaplaincy of the Government House, every month. Governor Akpabio used such occasions to demonstrate his total belief in the strong presence of God’s hands in the uneasy task of governance. It is the reason many see the uncommon transformation of his administration as a direct manifestation of Divine wisdom with which he is imbued.

The high point of the Governor’s demonstration of his religious obligation was a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, in company with President Goodluck Jonathan and other state governors, in 2013, where he had the rare opportunity of praying at the legendary Wailing Wall.
